Creamy Crouton Chicken

This is one super hearty dish that you will definitely want to make ASAP!  It only has a handful of ingredients and is very simple to make.  It was SO delicious too!

One thing I really liked about this dish was the texture.  It’s got a creamy sauce, but the croutons retain some of their crunchiness.  And let’s just talk about this sauce for a sec…it’s out of this world.  Seriously I could’ve just eaten it as a soup!  You definitely need to serve this with rice because it makes the perfect sponge for all that amazing sauce!  I also really liked the yummy swiss cheese on top of the chicken.  Mmmmm now my stomach is growling thinking about this meal!

This would be a perfect, warming, and hearty meal to enjoy in the fall or winter, but honestly it would be good any time of year!

Creamy Crouton Chicken

Yields: 6 servings

Creamy Crouton Chicken

  • 3 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 6 slices of Swiss cheese
  • 1 can cream of chicken soup, mixed with 1/4 cup water
  • 1 cup herb-seasoned croutons, crushed
  • 1/4 cup melted butter or margarine
  • Rice

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Cut chicken breasts in half (or even thirds if they're very large).  Place chicken breasts in greased baking dish.
  3. Place one slice of swiss cheese over each piece of chicken.
  4. Mix the Cream of Chicken soup with 1/4 cup water and pour over the top of the chicken. Crush the croutons and spread over the top.  Melt butter or margarine and drizzle over the top.
  5. Bake for 45 mins, or until chicken is done.
  6. Meanwhile, cook rice according to package directions.  Serve chicken over rice.

  1. This is a copycat/ripoff recipe from Paula Dean using 2 substitutions…water for the white wine and “croutons” instead of herb bread stuffing. Haven’t tried this recipe and don’t plan too… Paula’s is better! It’s on the food network website. “Chicken in Wine Sauce.”

Damaris, there is no need to leave rude comments. I had never seen Paula’s version and I correctly cited where I found this recipe. I am not intending to “ripoff” anyone. Also, I’ve tried a similar recipe using stuffing mix, and I didn’t like it NEARLY as much as this one with the croutons. That’s my opinion. If you have a different opinion, that’s totally fine, but you don’t have to be a jerk. And besides, if you’ve never tried this one, how do you know Paula’s is better??

      • Well said, Lindsay. There were many other ways of saying ‘oh, this is similar to a recipe I have. Try it with white wine in place of the water’, etc.

    • Damaris, no one owns recipes. There are so many variations on similar dishes; some you’ll like and some you won’t. I always tweak recipes anyway, so what’s to say Paula didn’t try something like this before she decided on white wine and stuffing? To each his/her own.
